Sam Martinez had been working at his family's lakeside resort for as long as he could remember. Every summer, from the time he was old enough to push a mop, he had spent his days cleaning cabins, mowing lawns, and avoiding the tourists who always seemed to ask the same questions.
This summer was supposed to be different. This summer, he was seventeen, and he had plans. Plans that didn't involve spending three months in the middle of nowhere, scrubbing toilets and fixing leaky pipes.
But then his dad had gotten sick, and his mom had needed help, and Sam had done what he always did - he'd put his plans on hold and stepped up.
"Sam!" his mom called from the office. "We have a new guest checking in. Can you help them with their luggage?"
Sam sighed and put down the paintbrush he'd been using to touch up Cabin 7. "Coming!"
He walked to the main office, expecting to see the usual family of four or retired couple. But instead, he found himself face-to-face with the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
She was about his age, with dark hair and eyes that seemed to see right through him. And she was alone.
"Hi," she said, her voice soft but confident. "I'm checking in. The name's Riley."
Sam felt his heart skip a beat. "Right. Um, I'm Sam. Let me help you with your bags."
As he led her to Cabin 12, the one at the end of the row with the best view of the lake, Sam couldn't help but wonder - who was this girl? And why was she here alone?
But more importantly, why did he have the feeling that her arrival was going to change everything?
